Students actively annotate using symbols and writing notes and questions. Here are some annotations that I have students make in English and in Spanish: often, I will only tell students to mark just 3-5 of these in a given text. Annotation marks are an important part of close reading because they really show what your students are thinking and what they find important in the text.
